Peace Crops has bees! We keep an apiary of about 20 hives, and sell local honey and hive products directly to customers or at the farmers’ markets in Manzanita and Tillamook. Local honey is widely known for its healing and anti-allergy properties, and since it’s all harvested right here in the Nehalem River valley, can be especially beneficial to people living in northern Tillamook County.
In addition to multifloral honey, we often have hive products like beeswax candles and lip balm. One of our specialities is Bamboo Honey: a dark, rich honey that comes from Fallopia japonica, or Japanese Knotweed. Isn’t it nice to know that something good can come from this invasive species?
Jim has served as the vice president of the Tillamook Beekeepers and as a mentor in the OSU Master Beekeeper program. He is available to speak to school and community groups, and can help with other bee-related issues like swarm collection, feral hive removal, and so forth. He is currently working on a year-long bee research project in conjunction with the OSU Honeybee Lab, learn about it here.
